Publications Manager

job description

This role is for a dedicated candidate to oversee the release of all publications released by GAPS Australia, a student-derived development aid organisation working with its primary branch in Nairobi, Kenya. The ideal candidate will be an effective leader able to inspire volunteers and will excel in articulating the GAPS message.

This role includes responsibility for print brochures, the website and film production but excludes circulars and media releases under the domain of the Communications Manager. The main role will be in preparation of the content, but co-ordination of the publication process (printing, website maintenance etc) is also included.

  • Within content preparation, primary tasks include leading a group of writers (either in a dedicated team or as part of individual project teams) into appropriately researching GAPS projects, presenting them with reference to the GAPS philosophy (particularly focusing on equal and two-way partnerships), page setting and formatting, and revising them into a finished product. This role also entails co-operation with the Communications Manager in regard to publication release in terms of timing and appropriateness. Collaboration with project groups is essential for success.

  • With co-ordination of the publication process, primary tasks include liaising appropriately (printing companies, the IT Manager etc) with view to ensuring successful publication.

This role reports directly to the corresponding Director-in-Charge. This role may either be associated with a team or may be in co-ordination with members of other teams.

The impact of this role on communities in Africa targeted by GAPS is significant as, by publicising the work of GAPS to the wider world, attention can be drawn to the causes underlying projects and new and existing projects are more likely to be supported.

The estimated time requirement for this role would vary depending on cycles but would average four to six hours a week, reducing appropriately throughout the year (eg during exams).
