Communications Manager

job description

This role is to act as a central communications point for GAPS Australia, a student-derived development aid organisation working with its primary branch in Nairobi, Kenya. The ideal candidate will be articulate and disciplined and will relate well in team interactions.

This role acts as the primary point of facilitation of communication not only within the organisation itself (internal communications) but also to manage communication between the organisation and its various supporters and backers (external communications).

  • Within internal communications, primary tasks include but are not limited to circulation of an internal newsletter detailing key events occurring within the organisation, communicating news about special events to members via email and organisation of occasional organisation-wide meetings. To do this effectively, effective collection of information from different teams throughout the organisation will be necessary.

  • Within external communications, primary tasks include but are not limited to circulation of a short external newsletter detailing key events occurring within the organisation, designed to inform supporters, partners and backers of GAPS, organising occasional articles in other publications, and co-operation with the Publications Manager to ensure appropriateness in publication release.

This role reports directly to the corresponding Director-in-Charge. This role currently is not directly associated with a team but may be in the future.

The impact of this role on communities in Africa targeted by GAPS is significant as, by ensuring cohesion of information within the organisation, organisational effectiveness (including synergy) can be derived and by informing supporters, partners and backers of the work of GAPS this role encourages others to further support the GAPS cause.

The estimated time requirement for this role would be four hours a week but may reduce at appropriate times of year (eg exams).
